R-E-B-E-C-C-A
by Sarah Farb

Dramaturge/Director: Ruth Madoc-Jones

R-E-B-E-C-C-A is a one-woman play about my sister, Rebecca, who is mentally retarded. At fourteen, she has the intellect of someone no older than three, but the emotional capacity of an ordinary teenager. Rebecca is not capable of understanding life's complexities, and is therefore never perturbed by everyday problems. Major decisions in her life are made by other people, and she is free to enjoy what she can when she wants. A life without responsibility or concern or complication is something anyone would envy at some point. Is it possible to be envious of a person who is mentally retarded? Is it possible to regard someone like Rebecca as something other than pitiable? In R-E-B-E-C-C-A, Rebecca addresses these issues while allowing the audience to get to know her on a very personal level.
