How do I apply for the SummerWorks Festival?

For the Local Series and the National Series, you must fill out an application online AND submit a hard copy of your actual application. The application form includes all of the guidelines necessary to apply properly.

What do I receive if I get a slot in SummerWorks?

The SummerWorks Theatre Festival offers successful applicants an opportunity to have their work presented to an audience. The Festival provides:

  • The venue for your show
  • The box office to sell the tickets
  • The front of house staff to let people into your show
  • Technicians and production support
  • Publicity

Why do I have to fill out both an online application and send two hard copies?

By filling out an online application, you are telling us that we are expecting hard copies from you as well. If we do not receive your hard copies, we will be in touch with you.

Will you tell me if you received my application?

We will only contact you about a missing application if you have filled in an online application and we do not receive hard copies. As the Festival received over two hundred applications, we only get in touch with applicants once the results have been determined.

How many applications do you get a year?

We receive between 175-200 applications for our Local Series for approximately 32-35 spots.

Do I have to live in Toronto to apply to the Local Series?

No. We accept applications from all over the world, however, should you be accepted, it is your responsibility to get yourself to Toronto and find accommodations, etc.

Is it the same for the National Series?

No. SummerWorks receives funding that is specific for our National Series which enables us to provide additional support to help with travel and accommodation costs.

If I’ve applied for the National Series, can I still apply for the Local Series?

Yes.

When do I find out if I got into SummerWorks?

All applicants will receive notification on April 1st.

Does SummerWorks hire my actors and stage manager?

Your casting and hiring is up to you. You may contact us if you need help, and we will offer support if we can.

Where do I rehearse?

That is up to you. If you would like some suggestions, please give us a call or send us an email. SummerWorks cannot offer rehearsal space but might be able to suggest possible rehearsal spaces.

How long does my piece have to be?

You can apply for either a 60 minute or a 75 minute slot. You must stick to your time slot. Each group is counting on precious minutes to get their set in place and prepare for their show. Please be considerate of this and do not go over your allotted time.

How do I promote my show?

SummerWorks offers a publicity workshop that can help give you pointers. We also will promote your show in our program guide and blog. Our festival publicist will also promote your show to major papers.
